How To Find And Change Your Air Filter

Maintaining your air filter is an important part of keeping your home’s HVAC system running efficiently. A dirty air filter can cause your system to work harder and use more energy, while also decreasing the air quality in your home. Here’s a quick guide on how to find and change your air filter.

Step 1: Locate Your Air Filter

The first step is to locate your air filter. In most cases, the air filter will be in the blower compartment of your furnace or air handler. You may also find it in a return air grille on the wall or ceiling of your home. If you’re not sure where your air filter is located, check your HVAC system manual or contact us at Oakes AC Services and we’ll be happy to schedule a maintenance visit.

Step 2: Determine the Filter Size

Once you’ve located your air filter, determine the size you need. The size should be listed on the side of the existing filter or in your HVAC system manual. The three dimensions are for the width, height and thickness of the filter, and are noted in inches. Example dimensions such as, 20x25x1 or 16x20x2.

Step 3: Purchase a New Filter

Most filters can be purchased at your local home improvement store or DIY home center. Selecting the type of filter media depends upon your specific indoor air quality needs. Fiberglass filters are the most common type and are budget-friendly, but they are less effective at capturing small particles. Pleated filters are more efficient and can capture smaller particles, but they need to be changed more frequently. Electrostatic filters use an electric charge to attract and trap particles and are highly effective, but the cost can be higher. Ultimately, the choice depends upon your specific needs and budget.

Step 4: Remove the Old Filter

Turn off your HVAC system before removing the old filter. For filters located in the blower compartment, carefully slide the old filter out of its slot, taking note of the direction of the airflow arrows printed on the filter frame. For filters found in a return air grille, unlatch the hooks to open the grille. Pull out the air filter, taking note of the direction of the airflow arrows printed on the filter frame.

Step 5: Insert the New Filter

It is a good idea to write the installation date on the face of the filter frame using a permanent black marker in case you forget the last time you changed your filter. Insert the new filter in the same direction as the old one, making sure it’s snugly in place. Check that the arrows on the filter frame are pointing in the same direction as the airflow in your HVAC system.

Step 6: Turn on Your HVAC System

Turn your HVAC system back on and check that the new filter is working properly. You should notice improved air quality in your home and your system running more efficiently.

It’s recommended that you change your air filter every 1-3 months depending on usage and the type of filter you’re using. By regularly changing your air filter, you’ll keep your HVAC system running smoothly and improve the air quality in your home.
